... all I ask in return is for him to tread lightly with churches that preach eternal damnation for unbelievers; not for the sake of my feelings, but because it's not going to go over well for someone to be telling our kids that their mom is going to hell.
... Even though, if he's a Christian, that's what he's supposed to believe?
From what I can tell, there are churches that don't preach that. There are churches that don't believe that.
Then they must not be Christian churches.
The Christian teaching is that there is only ONE WAY to salvation, and that is through believing in Jesus as the son of God and accepting him as your savior. So if Dad preaches about Jesus but mom doesn't believe in Him, there is a problem.

I don't know - I've known Christians that didn't seem to believe that everyone was going to hell. I've also known Christians that do believe that. I've been to church with people before and not all of them were the brimstone and hellfire kind of churches.

Here's the thing ... I am a moderate Methodist, not a snake handler or "fire and brimstone" person.
People don't want to admit to themselves that, as Jesus said in the Bible, the path is narrow.
If you don't believe he is the son if God, there is only one other option for you.
It's only a problem if you make it one. My kids have grown up in a very ethnically-diverse neighborhood, so it's not some big shock to them that different people believe different things... even within the same religion.

So, to you, you can't be a "real" Christian unless you believe that anyone who isn't a "real" Christian is going to hell?
