A relative of mine is an old maid. She lives with her older sister who is a divorced person. Both have sworn off men entirely. The divorced one has gained almost a hundred pounds and has been in and out of psych wards with severe depression ever since her divorce. The younger sister (age 46) has never had a date ever and has pretty much decided having a man in her life is not worth her time. She says that if nothing has happened yet, nothing will happen. She does not even talk socially to men.
I wonder how common this is. Women who have sworn off men and people over 45 who have never had a date with someone in a romantic way.

i only know one person like that and he has dated once or twice in the past only. he has issues with women. but i do know plenty of people who are single, and dating but cant find anyone to have a long term relationship with. they are mostly in their late 20s though.
It's pretty common for women. Women have a much easier time living without sex and companionship than men. Especially someone that well into her forties.
I don't think its that common as a national average but pretty common in certain families. I'm only basing this on what I've seen. One family with a mentally ill mother produced 3 very strange daughters, The oldest never really dated but did marry, husband committed suicide and she never had anything to do with men again. One sister had one relationship with a married man that lasted a few years and when he died she actually had the nerve to make contact with his wife thinking she might get something of monetary value, shes 60 and has never had another relationship. The youngest had her one and only relationship when she was 36, apparently had sex with him and then he wanted nothing to do with her, A few weeks later she totaled her car and severed all ties with her family. This one is the strangest of the three, she breaks out into hives from nerves "she says" regularly, light complected, wheres 50's style makeup, tons of perfume and has spoken with a fake British accent since her teen years. She doesn't do drugs or drink, has cats and no friends. When you try and talk to her her eyes dart back and forth, her skin gets blotchy and her voice gets shrilly. I got to know these women through the younger brother that hung around our skateboard shop.
Oh, I haven't seen any of these women in several years but for those interested I think its a safe guess they are still available.
If youve never dated in the first place, yeah, it is wierd. But if you've been burned one time too many, or just decide its not for you, thats another story there.
If they have NEVER dated, then they have issues or perhaps are meeting their relational needs covertly. Gays\Lesbians in rural areas etc. can sometimes fit this description.
maybe she is unattractive and can't get no dates ever thought of that?
