I just found out that when my niece married this guy he added her maiden name to his. it comes before his last name. What is this?

What is what? They combined names. I know people that have done this. Heck, I know people married int he 70s that did this.

Some people even take part of their last names and combine them so they both have new last names.

It may be part of an FLR arrangement.

I don't know if it "the norm" anywhere in the U.S., but that's different than it being something noteworthy.

As said... whatever may have been common 100 years ago in England...
or may even occur today in some corners of the world...
it is not the least bit common in the US now ... nor at any time in the past.
