I think that's exactly what happened. She probably had to ask for a special leave to get the day off. Maybe her job is about providing weekend customer service, so it's tough to get a day off on a weekend. Then the date venue fell through, so she couldn't justify begging a day off just for a movie.
She works as a waitress after school and during the weekends. Don't know how flexible her scedule is.

If a waitress wants an un-scheduled day off, she needs to find a replacement for herself. She probably had to ask a co-worker to cover for her (thereby inconveniencing the co-worker), in exchange for promising to do the same in the future, for the co-worker. So when the special event was canceled, she had to un-do those arrangements. It's kind of a big deal in that world (also depending on one's relationships with other waitresses) to ask someone to substitute for you. There are hoops to jump through, usually.

Well now I just hope she really worked on saturday, so she had a reason not to go see a movie with me.
Is there an answer that would make her behavior acceptable to you?
