I always thought that term was reserved for same-sex couples. Now I see it more and more to describe hetero couples. Now I am confused and have to "wonder" when someone uses the term to describe their significant other.....

Please no "why should it matter" comments. I'm just curious.

Because it sounds less immature than "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" which seems like terms for kids. lol

Yeah...I guess you are right for "pre-engagement" couples. Especially for the 25 and older crowd. It still makes me wonder though.

It also sounds like you work together in a law firm. I can't think of a single term for one's significant other (ugh!) that doesn't make me feel ill, so it's just as well I don't have one.

In a parallel universe where I allowed such a thing, I might resort to 'inamorata' or 'muse', but as that's unlikely to happen it doesn't matter.

Married, engaged or dating is so much easier and very clear what the relationship is and in this era married can and does refer to opposite sex couple and same sex couples.
Personally I don't like significant other, it is emotionless to me
Live in is pretty clear but I think some are trying to use prettier words than live in, shacking up or living in sin...

Me too, I have a husband also known as Mr. CSD on this forum not a hubby. I do not have a *DH* blech.
I also have sons and daughters not *DS or DD* double blech.

Never and now the oldest turned 40 yesterday and the youngest is 30 and our grandchildren are not
kiddos, rug rats, mattress monsters or anything outside of grandchildren, grandson or granddaughter.
Mr. CSD is Papa and I am Oma *technically I am step mom/grandma to some of the children and
grandchildren*

I know. It's like nowadays just saying "children/kids/grandkids/husband/wife" is too "boring".
