Scrooging may be messed up, but it's also brilliant. After all, Jan. 2 thru Feb. 13 is the breakup season for a reason. People "need" to keep a faltering relationship through the holidays, to look normal and "grown up" to family and friends. But with Valentine's Day, there no point. It's a big money sinkhole, with minimal returns on investment: staying out of the doghouse and maybe sex.
Heck, prior to my "retirement" from dating, I always found it easy, almost effortless, to meet women during that time period. I even jokingly referred to it as "Open Enrollment". More than once, I met a woman at a Valentine's Day singles dance, and dated her for a while after that.
Honestly for me the only time I find it tough to be single is on NYE, every other holiday doesn't bother me, not even Valentine's Day. Besides last Valentine's Day I didn't even get to see my ex because his kids had a competition out of state on that day, so we ended up celebrating the day before. Plus, most of my friends are married and have been for a while, so they don't really celebrate Valentine's day either.
If a person can't buy a gift for someone they've been dating & them dump them right before the holiday, the whole relationship must not have meant anything to them then.
That's why I always play it safe and buy a gift for him that I like, too. So in case he breaks up with me, I have an awesome gift for myself. Sometimes it is such a great gift that I HOPE he breaks up with me right before Christmas.
I am in funny mode today, in case you haven't noticed.
I dated a guy for a little bit, that the relationship had started around November. To be honest, at the time, I didn't really know how serious the relationship was, WAS it getting serious? Were we supposed to get Christmas presents for each other? Stuff like that.
Soooo...I bought a nice throw for his couch. He bought me nothing. LOL
