Why that isn't obvious, I don't know. The gyms hook the guys by selling them on the idea, that women will swoon at big muscles. (The truth is, that many women are turned off by body-builder types.) The car manufacturers and vendors clearly use the same pitch, publishing photos of their latest creations with women leaning on them enticingly. It's all fake! And yet there are a lot of gullible, needy guys out there who believe the advertising industry's version of reality!

And when we tell some of these guys, that muscles don't matter (they're hidden by your clothes, so obviously whether someone's "buff" or not is irrelevant), other guys comment to the contrary, that you "need to get buff" to be attractive to women; get buff and give yourself a makeover by doing so. That might only be true for the significantly overweight guys. And yet, there are women who like overweight guys; they're more huggable, having a sort of teddy-bear quality. That's definitely a thing for some women. Not to mention the fact, that good character and personality are at the top of the list, way above poundage, buffage, and other superficial issues for most women.

Bravo, -x! Finally, a man on this forum came out and said it all! The sad sacks dismiss it when we women post what you just said.
What is interesting is that while its only a minority of women who express a preference for muscularity in men, strength and muscularity in men none-the-less is associated with both a higher number of sex partners and more children in men. So at least for muscularity this may not just be a sales pitch, guys who go to the gym might be on to something.

There is a thought that muscularity in men may be less of a peacock's tail and more of a deer's antlers, it is predictive of other traits women are looking for.
