I can only speak for myself but I posted here (and on other boards) because I like being able to open a dialogue about an issue that I can't really have with my real life friends and can do so anonymously.
Plus, you get to hear so many different perspectives and advice from across the board. For instance, I posted here about my unemployed status and relationship challenges. All my friends are single and their answers are usually along the lines of "well at least you have a man" and truthfully, I don't feel like most can relate to the jobless thing. They are generally supportive but I haven't been able to discuss certain things with them.
So this creates another outlet. And I have to say, I've gotten advice here that has been very helpful and I hadn't heard from real life friends. Sometimes its good to speak with people outside your inner circle. Sometimes, you get more truthful and better advice.
I also have to add I love reading what others think and feel about certain topics. This forum has it all, TV, music, your local city, pets, relationships etc.
Pretend that the power goes out, everything else comes back on, even your computer... but no relationship thread on city data.... I don't know why people want to hang themselves out on here really... does everybody really know each other and hang out... probably not.
Town&Country...duh..you are here..what does that say about you. LOL. Wink.

My days are filled with CD, writing, soap operas, the Food Network, home cooked meals and playing with my dog. I hate it. I'd rather be fighting traffic to get to work, paying out the booty for gas and dry cleaning, listening to office gossip, answering to a boss and fighting traffic to get home.
