Just curious to hear some stories on couples that had professions which required them to live in different regions and how they dealt with it. I assume most just have the woman take some odd job but does this destroy many relationships?

I'm gonna be dealing with agriculture and her future profession makes nyc her clear frontrunner.

I figured this was more common but I guess since most people meet while they are working its rarely much of an issue.

Long distance relationships(whatever the reason) are really hard to keep up and usually someone gets bored of it....which leads to the break up or one party moving. You guys would need to be really serious about your relationship and have a plan on eventually getting together in the near future...not like "in 5 years we can be in the same place"...that wont work. Besides the longer you guys are in the relationship the longer your life is on hold. Personally I dont think I could last in a long distant relationship longer than a year or two depending on my/his goals and what was going on in our lives at the time. You need to have a serious talk with your girl and figure out if yours and her life plans are on the road.

Sorry, we've only done it for a few months, not long term.

Well I mean ways to avoid being long distance. Long distance is definitely a dead end road but we're not going to take on a job at mcdonalds to make it work. I know people who commute 2 hours, become teachers etc but this is just a nightmare scenario for me. Its something we never even thought about until now.

Its hard enough to find someone who is perfect but if you add in finding somebody thats in a field with compatible job markets it seems almost impossible.

Well there is plenty of agriculture just outside of NYC..maybe an hour by train or so. Why not just have her sign up for a long commute so you both can be happy?

I should have been more specific. My expertise is in air quality especially dealing with hog lagoons and other agricultural air pollution. Atmospheric science jobs in the NYC area seem few and far between and very competitive with Columbia grads dominating.
