I've always found eating out in restaurants to be uncomfortable for me, no matter who I'm with. Those inevitable painful, stressful lulls in conversation, you're done eating and they've barely started, or you're eating slowly and they're already finished, or it's taking an extra-long time for the food to arrive, or the check. Yikes!

I'm one of these people who can't eat unless they're reading something, and I just love these restaurants with pages and pages of menu selections when I forgot to bring something along to read. If I can't read, then I gobble down my food too fast.

I'm a good cook, I'd much prefer to cook for my date and have them over to my house.

My last SO could pick away at his food for hours on end and constantly reprimand me for eating too fast. Good lord above! Does it take 2 minutes to nibble away at one strawberry or 10 minutes to get all the meat out of one crab leg!

I'd guess there is a direct relationship to how long you've been together. From what I've noticed in couples....

Years 1-5 you sit beside each other.

Years 6-20 you're across the booth and have romantic conversation.

Years 20-30 you're across the booth and seldom speak.

Years 30-40 you're sitting at separate booths.

Years 40-50 you're at separate restaurants cause you can't agree on what you want.

Years 50 and on you're back to sitting beside each other so you can feed each other with spoons at the old folks home.

That would depend upon the meal. High fiber = across. Low fiber = next to.

I prefer sitting across from someone on a date. Sometimes a guy might want to sit next to me for whatever reasons but then its hard to talk, its almost like youre talking to the empty booth across from you.

funny I just noticed a couple do that in a diner and thought it was weird that in a booth they sat down right next to each other rather than across. DH and I have always sat down across from each other it never occured that it should be any other way...LOL.. We like conversating and seeing each other...

My wife and I sit across from each other if it's just the two of us together. If the whole family/relatives are involved, then we just sit where ever.

Yeah, but you can talk to each other and see each other sitting side by side too. You let the other person into your personal space.

I agree that across is more common, even if sitting at the dinner table at home.
