100% do not give him the job. It is tough times, and he is a great friend. But never mix friends with business. Last thing you need is for something terrible to happen and it fall back on you. Maybe you can help in another way?
I have several times put myself out there for friends to get hired, and learned my lesson the hard way.
You did the right thing. Helping anyone, even a close friend, should never be at the expense of your business or your credibility.

Yeah, if he needed it I would have no problem making a house payment for him, getting him some groceries, what ever it took for however long. I know for a fact he would do the same for me.

If you can't take it, don't dish it out. Just sayin'.
You're giving youself way to much credit and relevancy. The barbie assembly line is getting backed up, get to work. We certainly do not need any female barbies with penis's.
