If you had to choose one, which you would rather be... kind or smart? This was an old line from a Jimmy Stewart movie (Harvey), one of my all time favorites..and it has always stuck with me.
Would you rather be kind or smart?
Would you rather be married to someone who is kind or smart?
I don't see why one can't be both smart and kind. And these choices imply that by being kind, one would be on the dumb side...
So no contest, I would pick being smart over being kind. Being kind (and dumb) would mean getting taken advantage of by others and that's just not for me. Also, I do consider myself smart, and I couldn't bear not being intelligent. I love the way my brain works very very much.
I prefer to be with someone who is smart, but not a smart-a$$.
When he's being unkind, then I'll give him a knuckle sandwich.
If he's unkind too often, then he gets the boot.
Of course you can, it's just a hypothetical question designed to see which quality you value more: kindness or intelligence. Personally, I value intelligence but I value kindness more. I've come across several people in my life who are unfortunately poorly educated or below average intelligence... but they are genuinely good, kind people and I'd much rather spend time with them than some elitist intellect who looks down on anyone with a lower IQ than them.
In particular, I know a man who at the age of only 21 adopted his abandoned 3 year old niece. He is poorly educated and not intelligent but I admire him more than any "intellect" I've ever come across because I don't know many 21 year olds guys who would give up their life style to become a father to a child that isn't even his. He didn't even have a girlfriend or wife to help him look after her. He's a hero in my book and no amount of "smarts" could top him.
