Tourism ruined it.
Now there's more private parties or "club" membership/prepayment only venues. There's also a lot more large events around the country. It used to be that Manhattan was the mecca, but now there are clubs/venues in almost every other state (mostly private). Although the "pro-houses" are still quite abundant throughout Manhattan.

I know the trend when I left was going toward the Eulenspiegel model of meet-ups, but thought a brick-and-mortar type of biz would always survive. Too bad.
No wonder they came to PA when I had mine.
