I have been to all 12 Vatican museums. They are ALL so stuffed to the seams with "priceless" artifacts that they literally use statuary as door stops. It has been estimated the total gold leafing alone in the Vatican is worth over 4 billion dollars ( when gold was at 300 dollars/ounce) I do not pretend to be an art expert, but what I saw with my own eyes as compared with other appraised art throughout the world I would say the Vaticans art wealth alone is closer to 500 billion ---that's right, BILLION, not 500 million dollars. I have searched the web to exhaustion and No one has the knowledge or stones to throw out a REAL number. r. potts
This is why Pope Francis' gesture of not living in the (relatively) lavish papal apartments is merely a gesture. It's good theatre but absent changes to church doctrine, it's just a non-binding temporary shift of emphasis. In theological terms, without repentance, there can be no remission of sins.
Remember people talking about the time value of money? So here's a silly case.
Let's say the church started in earnest 1500 years ago, and someone donated $1. And let's assume there wasn't a lot of financial planning so the standard compounded yield was 2%.
So, (1.02)^1500 = 7,947,996,055,023
Einstein called compound interest the most powerful force in the universe for a reason.
