I couldn't see any other threads on it so does anyone recall what it was all about and, are the religious prophiteers telling us to get ready or are they, having done the job of trying to scare a few gullibles into last - minute Faith, hoping that everyone will have forgotten about it?

The Mayan calendar is called a 'mesoamerican long-count' calendar that uses base-20 and base-18 mathematics. It calculates the date by counting the number of days that have passed since the starting date (usually thought to be around August 11, 3114 BCE).
Without going too deeply into Mayan calendar terminology, the entire '2012' phenomenon relates to the end of the last long-count 'period' (calculated as '12.19.19.17.19'); supposedly, the Mayan calendar ends on December 20, 2012 (another '12.19.19.17.19'), which is heralded as a 'doomsday' in which the earth will be destroyed or humanity wiped out by some kind of catastrophe.
Most credible scientists and researchers are, on the other hand, fairly confident in stating that they have no information to suggest that the Mayans
themselves thought the world would come to an end in 2012, and are quick to point out that the calendar
does contain notations and records for events
after the supposed 2012 'end date'.
In short -- go ahead and buy the house on the beach for Christmas next year. It's a good investment.
