It is unbelievable what this group of freedom riders endured and faced. Do you think you could have done what these young people did?

My mom is from Alabama. She's White and she left when she was 16 and never went back but a couple of times on business.

I'm not sure if I could, I have been with protesters that have been arrested for social justice causes where I have stepped back when the authorities annouced those that did not would be arrested. I have seen little old ladies and young women have the courage to live out the Gospels when I didn't
All these people that go that extra step are divine rebels.

The Gospels call for all of us to become activists for social justice, while there is nothing wrong with sitting around praying about the plight of others we are called to take action to help those that are in need.

"This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.
13
5 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends.
14
You are my friends if you do what I command you."

James Zwerg who participated in Freedom Rides regards his contribution to the civil rights movement as “an incredible religious experience” because he believed he was doing “God’s work” when protesting segregation.
Those ladies being arrested are part of a movement started by Roy Bourgeois, an ordained Catholic Priest, denounced America’s support for dictatorships in Latin America and founded School of the Americas Watch, which seeks to shut down Fort Benning, in an effort to “live according to the justice and charity of Christ.”
Many of these social justice activists view their faith as a personal commitment with public implications.

I think many people do not get involved because they feel the issues are to political, I know I have had posts removed from religious forums and I know of priests that have been told not to speak on certian subjects because they are considered to political, but they are human rights issues, Jesus spoke of such issues and told us to take action.

As in the PBS special abuse of power by law enforcement agencies from local all the way up to the FBI still continue today
¡Presente! - SOA Watch Vigil Persists Despite Heavy Infiltration and Intimidation by Authorities

The FBI raids homes of innocent peace activists using the excuse that they may be terrorists.
So things have not changed much over the past fifty years
I guess if I was a member of the military industrial complex I would view peace activists as terrorists also.
