Meet Bart Ehrman: A One-Man God Fraud Squad | Belief | AlterNet

Quote:
It's relatively easy to fool illiterate hordes.

"If people are literate, they can recognize writing styles. But if you can't read or write and you can only listen to writings read aloud" — which was mainly how Christianity was practiced in its first few centuries — "it's hard to do the kind of stylistic analysis" that scholars employ when comparing suspected forgeries with their alleged authors' known works, searching for inconsistencies in grammar, diction and dogma.

What I've always found interesting is that we now know that there were hundreds of "Gospels" floating around in those early centuries. It is not hard for [some] Christians today to say "this one" or "that one" or that one was not inspired because their theologians over the centuries have said so, but they are willing to say "THESE 4 RIGHT HERE" are inspired.

Anyone who knows Christian/biblical history knows that writing books in other people's names to gain credibility. When it comes to those 66 books in the bible, that knowledge is bypassed (by some).

I have to agree with you...most don't critically examine the books they profess are dictated by God. I guess sometimes it's easier to check ones brain at the door. But I still believe the bible contains spiritual messages that can be discerned through all the fabrication...especially when the same spiritual messages can be discerned from non-Christian scriptures.
