The official magazine for Jehovah's Witnesses has described those who leave the church as "mentally diseased".
"Suppose that a doctor told you to avoid contact with someone who is infected with a contagious, deadly disease," the article reads. "You would know what the doctor means, and you would strictly heed his warning. Well, apostates are 'mentally diseased', and they seek to infect others with their disloyal teachings." War of words breaks out among Jehovah's Witnesses - Home News, UK - The Independent

Not surprising among a community that strictly controls any outside information reaching their members that might conflict with their teachings. Once this information does reach certain members, and if it does influence them to leave, it is not chalked up to the information's validity - but rather, the blame is placed on the members who were 'seduced' by it to leave. To prevent this experience from replicating itself among more members, the JWs resort to disfellowshipping as the first answer, and then the accusation of 'mental disease' to prevent any members from contacting them and being exposed to the information.
Just one of the many reasons why they can technically be labelled as a cult. I've seen firsthand how powerful their methods of indoctrination can be, and how they cultivate a culture of intellectual ignorance as a holy ideal. It's no coincedence that a low education level marks the vast majority of members.
Fair enough. Then say those who apostate are actually cured of the delusion peddled by the JW's and substantiate it. Reap the whirlwind, as I said elsewhere.
I always invite them in - they make for an interesting diversion from a boring afternoon. It's fun to make them cringe with well-thought biblical references.
