There's no right or wrong answer. I was wondering about Jesus' command to love God above all and wondered what that meant, and the reasons why people love God, or purport to love him.
I've listed a few options in the poll, be interesting to see the results:
A comment I'll make. To be perfectly honest, the character of Yahweh as portrayed in the Torah or OT isn't one you'd really think of as LOVABLE. Respect, awe, worship, sure, but do most people get warm fuzzy feelings when reading the Old Testament? The same applies to Allah in the Koran and, come to think of it, the portrayal of God in most holy scripture isn't like the totally forgiving figure he's portrayed as.
I would say most of our love of God is for the concept of God we have. God doesn't seem to speak much in the OT so in the NT it's for Jesus.
I suppose I've been struggling with the idea of love God. I would say I would love God as the source of all Life, in a way I can't help it, but I have problems loving the character of God. I find 'love' a peculiar way of relating to a divine being in a way...should it not be programmed into us? How can we NOT love the one who gave us life, like a parent? We love our children partly because we care for them, their welfare, but God is all-powerful and infinite so it's hard to feel pity/concern for God himself, more just an awe and respect.
I'm not a Christian, but this is one of the primary reasons why I'm not. I can't see anything to love about the biblical version of God. He reads to me as a tyrant and a bully. It seems like most people think if you believe in God, you MUST therefore worship him. Even if I believed in the biblical God, I don't think I can worship someone so willing to kill and use fear as a weapon.
When people say that God is all loving and forgiving, it really makes me wonder if they've ever read the bible.
When a believer receives the Lord Jesus Spirit , His Spirit is inbred with the ability to Love the Lord , and Jesus Spirit has the power to rid dark spirits who oppose the Lord Jesus and His purpose ....
I love the "idea" of a god for some people I know that look to the "myth" and find comfort and contentment...if it works for them to believe, then that makes me happy too.
