I think this is very true. Also, as another poster said, there is a lot more information out there now because of the internet. Although there is a lot of disinformation and outright lies out there, I think it's pretty clear the Church has whitewashed its history.
One other factor....as an ex-Mormon...I can honestly say that as an institution, I think the Church is adrift. It happens to almost all institutions within about 250 years or less.
So, it's sort of a combination of factors. People are lazy and undisciplined...but the Church as an institution has become complacent in it's own way, clinging to a 19th Century approach to spirituality in the 21st Century.
