Does this documentary sit well with people who are Christian? I just watched this and I had a hard time digesting it. I'm not a Christian though so I was wondering if this is how all Evangelical Christians are raised as kids? Or is this blown out of whack by a terrorist like sect of the Evangelical belief. I realize it's a movie so did they seek out the most outrageous or is this the norm. These people are pretty set on getting into government and changing things. It concerns me. They would make this a Christian nation is a heart beat and get rid of the rest of us during the process. The kids look stressed and are crying constantly.

(Ted Haggard is in it, I guess that's creepy for them ), aside from that is this a normal upbringing for your children?

I kind of suspect that many kids raised in such a manner grow up to become atheists. Things like that are probably one of the reasons for the growth of Atheism in the USA.

I am a pastor. One of the things that my congregants have repeatedly said about us is that we are "a real family". We aren't super-spiritual phony. yes---there are people like that. But not all of us are.

I would think that because they get them at such a young age that they would be too scared to be anything but Christian. I think they would carry that fear with them all thier lives. I remember seeing this movie & I felt sad for those children.

I know, I'm still sad after seeing it. It's lingering on in my brain. Hence the thread, I'm hoping most say they don't condone this kind of religious battering. But, I've learned through my life that things look different to others and they might see this as the only way to raise a child. The children in this movie look so frightened all the time and grieving about things only adults usually think about. I must say on their behalf they certainly appear bright and well mannered, just disturbed.

That's basically how my brother and I turned out. Granted, our denomination was very different from the Pentecostals in that they seem to be very "showy" and our church was focused on being...well...as somber as possible. But the strictness was there, the super-far-right conservatism was there, and a literal interpretation of the Bible was most definitely there. I can recall many church youth retreats where the devotionals would end with many crying 8-12 year-olds coming forward to proclaim what vile, miserable sinners they were and to beg God for forgiveness. That's the part of "Jesus Camp" that hit me the hardest. Those kids have been convinced that they are horrible, filthy creatures, and I don't think that's something children should be made to believe. On the other hand, I was taught the same thing and that's probably one reason I'm an atheist now. It would be interesting to revisit the kids they interviewed when they're adults. I'm guessing at least some of them would at least be non-religious, if not atheists.

A truly frightening movie.

If it helps though, the Christians I saw it with were just as disgusted by it as I was. So it is not a common experience for Christians as a whole. But, unfortunately, it is common enough to still be a concern for the kids involved.

I think it should constitute child abuse and be a criminal offense. That level of brainwashing on such young children is evil.

Are you serious? You can't possibly be, but just in case, HELL, no.

Oops, just realized you were addressing Evangelicals. I'm not one of them. Carry on.

But, yes, I find this freaky and disgusting and having nothing to do with what Christ taught. Don't worry, they will not make a "Christian Nation" out of this country. Please accept the fact that there are MANY Christians, albeit not as noisy as the nuthatches, who highly treasure separation of church and state, and we will fight to keep it that way.
