Religion, like science, has rules. It must have rules otherwise there is no difference between religious people and insane people.
I can only come up with my theory that insane people 'truly' believe whatever they believe, while religious people only 'theoretically' accept their belief.
As for science, the line that seperates a genius from a madman is very thin.
I'm not so sure. Kids are pretty open to the idea that there are things that cannot be seen. It's only later when they put their faith in reason instead of in their hearts that they question the existence of the supernatural.
It seems like we're born believing, and only have that taken away when we learn to use rhetoric.

How can a newborn seem like a believer?
They seem like they have no religious beliefs whatsoever.
Then they grow up and are subjected to all kinds of rhetoric.
Then they become a believer or not a believer

Exactly. Babies have a "blank slate". There are no beliefs or knowlege at all. EVERYTHING is learned. We are born with certain instincts to survive (Cry to get attention to be fed, etc) and that's about it.

After being born and given a foundation by your family, you choose which path to follow.
Choosing a path is very much about having faith in something or someone.
