We are forbidden to make images of any person. We also are forbidden to do anything that might lead to veneration of Muhammad(saws).
There are a few exceptions and conditions that will allow partial dipictions of people. such as if no entire living creature is completly shown and the image is for educational purposes. Also faces of Angels and prophets are never to be shown,
With that said some very good movies have been made. but they were seldom watched by non-Muslims.
Over all non-Muslims will not pay to see a movie about Islam, unless it depicts us as terrorists.
But for the Curious here is a very good youtube movie about Islam and Muhammad. it meets the approval of most scholars. It is an Hour and 31 minute movie
The BBC did a Documentary on the life of Muhammad(saws) a few years ago. However it does not meet the guidlines regarding images of people. It is not a Movie approved by most Muslims for that reason.
The movie "Innocence Of Muslims" is about Muhammad. THe movie depicted Muhammad as a violent, vicious mass murdering pedophile, but that is what the Koran and Hadiths say about him. That's the joke. The movie depicts Muhammad fairly accurately to what the Koran and Hadiths say about him, and it's so pathetic it's funny. It makes me think of South Park's rendition of Joe Smith and the Mormon religion. The humor is funny because it's true. I don't think you will get the humor it if you have never read the Koran or Hadiths.
Someone needs to do a movie about the battle of the trench and the massacre of the Qurayza Jews. The Koran and Hadiths talks of how over 900 Jewish men were beheaded in an orderly fashion in small groups, while Muhammad sat in the shade, witnessing the whole ordeal like it was a picnic. Someone needs to reenact that scene. I want to see the G-rated version of that.

It seems the issue of Mohammed's depiction is not absolute. Sunni's say no way, Shi'a say yahweh. (Sorry, bad joke). Acutally Shi'a are not as absolute as Sunni's are.
And then we have the multitude of Mohammed images from the Middle Ages produced by Muslims. Apparently back then it was not as blasphemous as now.

There are many more there.
The point is, it is an interpretation, not an edict, otherwise ALL muslims over the centuries would have concurred.
