Just curious. I got to wondering if people built an artificial intelligence if it would have a soul assigned to it, or if it would exist only as a machine. Not really sure how to put that in a succinct question though.

Check out the Atheist and Agnostic forum. I think they have a thread on something like this.
At the risk of being contrarian, to me this issue perfectly illustrates the probable fallacy of an eternal 'soul'. Before we physically existed, were was our soul? Floating in space? To me the overwhelming likelihood is that it does not exist.
I am going to become Clintone the Oracle temporarily and predict the future:
Whether or not most people who believe in souls will believe robots can have souls will depend on whether or not we can create sentient robots.
"Plowing through" the novel Cloud Atlas (and yeah, it can an effort, at times) souls are implanted into robots that have advanced almost to the level of reaching sentience.

We're really not at the level when any members of our species should be creating mechanical life, are we?
I don't really trust the secularists at it either. I definitely don't trust me. I'd be very tempted to create mechanical life merely because it would be cool. That sounds quite comparable to a twelve-year old wanting to have a baby because babies are cute.

There is a thread about it. It's over 100 pages long last I checked.
No one has ever seen or measured a soul, so I assume it's an imaginary thing. People don't like the idea of ceasing to exist after death, so people created the idea of the soul as a way to cope.

Lots of people are curiuous about this stuff, but is there anyone who is qualified to conclusively answer this?
IF eternal souls exist, are finite, and are "assigned" to new beings, then I suppose one could be assigned to a robot. Thats a lot of "ifs" for me to get through.

First you would have to define what a "soul" is and who would make it and assign it.
As someone who does not believe there are "souls" it is more or less like asking if someone makes a horseless carriage, would they put horseshoes on it.
A more pertinent question is how we would teach an AI to derive and adhere to a moral code. That's similar to asking how we would install a braking mechanism in a horseless carriage. Far more useful and practical.
