Joel Osteen is preaching "New Age Lite" in my opinion, as does Joyce Meyers, Fred Price, Creflow Dollar, Robert Schuller, and many other televangelists.

"New Age" has its roots in Gnosticism, as does Scientology (but it's even further out there).

Rhonda Byrnes' mega-best selling book "The Secret" was hard-core new-age teaching, and a modern version of Zig Ziglar's "Think and Grow Rich."

I'm of the opinion that New Age teachings are downright dangerous - on my fronts - and yet, they sure do persist. Gnosticism got its start 2,000 years ago.

Are there that many gullible people, or is there some substance to this "name it and claim it" philosophy?

we have to tell people not to text and drive.
The average iq is 105. But many can still write real well.
"unarmed" = innocent in some circles.

and you worry about scientology?

Average IQ is in a range.

Actually the average IQ is a range between 90 and 120.
Is a 120 IQ good?

Scientology persists due to endorsement by movie stars. New Age actually does have something to it. Gnosticism has been around forever.

Each person, preacher has their place in the scheme of things.
Whatever brings people to an awareness of God is ok in my book.
I don't care for the fear/hellfire talk...but, it touches those souls that only relate to that.
So, whatever keeps you loving and focusing on God...I sure don't care.

They'll take one tittle of fact and go fiction from there. Sad though that people fall into it. But I am sure the same people thought Jerrys world was reality tv. Or that judge shows are reality. All scripts to entertain the masses. Bookstores dont help by putting occult on the shelfs. But hey hollywood makes billions off of it. Because everyone tithes to their gods. American Idol this, Competion that. And the masses flock to it like moths to the flame. How many of our youths care about the sciences and the Arts. They are one and the same.
To model the mind it takes discipline. Geometry and illustration are the same.
I've seen some pretty ignorant curriculum and the educated people or ones that have a degree are confused as ****. Like they just got chewed up digested and spit out. Some of the smartest people I ve met are speaking a "whole nother language. The physics boy's graduating top class are maybe high school level.
They couldn't put a gearbox together in their head much less on paper. Clock makers are rare these days.

Like the universe is a lottery...
Just like the new age tells them.....

People know they are going to die & are trying to figure the meaning of their life. In western society we get to choose our "tribe" now, imo a culturally advanced evolution for a society. In the past, or in the developing world, you don't question your tribe because you need it for your survival. Those of us fortunate to be educated & relatively affluent can survive outside our given tribe & can choose what we want to believe if it gives us hope.

People can cling to their traditions, make up new beliefs or market these to the spiritually needy.

I mean what is considered "normal" in our society is believing in someone born of a virgin & then came back from the dead & people celebrate this by eating his body & drinking his blood. Why that is considered more reasonable than "new-age" notions is ridiculous. Folks don't even examine this nonsense honestly since it is (mostly) our tribe surrounding us daily. If they leave the tribe they usually just choose a variation on the same theme anyway, not point out that it is really arbitrary & absurd.

Really? Wow. Then the women who major in physics are out-performing the "boys". Well, I can't say that comes as a surprise considering the enormously gifted women coming out of the physics programs at places like MIT and Caltech.

Rock on, sisters. Show the boys how it's done.

Why? Because there is a market for those things. The easiest way to make a million dollars is to write another book about religion or spirituality. You don't have to be right about anything, because no facts are involved.

I wish I could say you were wrong.

But Barnum tapped into a truth that was in evidence for centuries before he nutshelled it.
