I'm waiting for this thread to turn into a heated religious debate.
I'll ruin the vibe of the thread.
I happen to believe there are no animals in the after life--going back to the OP's second question. Instead, I believe animals reincarnate until they become human and then works towards Heaven. The way I think of it why would a dog want to be a dog for eternity? He would rather be a human for eternity.
Also, I can talk to dogs and dogs do speak when they bark if you have the right ears you can hear what they are saying.

Why would you want to be a human for eternity if there was some other higher thing you could be? (like the dog becoming a higher thing by eventually being a human.)

Using this logic, is heaven is another universe and do humans become what popular culture calls aliens?
(I don't think so, but I certainly can't prove it!)
Reincarnation is rather pointless if one can't remember the lessons learned in previous lives. Thus a dog reincarnating as a human would almost need to be random. And who can say if reincarnation can't work in the other direction - perhaps a human king and powerful conqueror reincarnates as a flea. Who knows? It's all speculation.
However, there have been enough reports of seeing and hearing animal ghosts that, if such a netherworld exists, I'm pretty confident that animals are in it - at least some of them. I very much doubt the cow you ate at the burger joint will be there, or some anonymous deer or that roadkill raccoon. I'm guessing (yeah, it's a really big guess) that only animals loved by humanity make the cut.

I can see it would be a bit awkward being in Heaven and having a the "Big Macs" you had come up and say hello.
