Winter solstice... It's only hours away.

Many here know of the pagan origins that were usurped by particularly the Jewish and Christian religions in celebrating the rebirth of the Sun. There is no reason to have to reiterate all of that again.

At this time of year which means so much too many, let's wish everyone the best of the season no matter if you view it from a religious or secular point of view.

This is our earth, our world, our families and the only life we have. Let us all take care of it all the best we can, no matter what our perspective or spiritually. Together is better.

Doesn't start with the winter solstice at my house, although we do love the change of seasons year 'round - such as they are! For us the "fun" starts with Halloween and goes through the -ber months. We absolutely love it. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas. (New Year's Eve is kind of meh for us but it IS fun to see the number on the calendar change.) Hope everybody has fun this holiday no matter how you celebrate.

I didn't know there were seasons in the SoCal desert...

When I lived in AZ there were distinct seasons though perhaps not obvious to non-residents. You get Saguaro blossoms and wildflowers in the spring for example. If you know what to look for, it's easy enough to determine what season it is.

Sadly I now live in upstate New York where the differences are painfully obvious.

Yep, we have all four seasons here: Factory Closure, Tax Increase, Meth, and Heroin.

I'll affirm the OP's point: the winter solstice is the reason for the season. I will celebrate at 11:49 local time with a rum and coke.

They're verrrrrrrrrrry subtle...and they're weird.

For example, it was only within the last week or two that our few and far-between deciduous trees had turned autumn colors...meanwhile, the tallest mountains around me are snowy-white.

But yes. They exist. Example: right now, it is NOT 102F season.

Considering the diversity of our group here, I think the seasonal message one of my friends posted seems appropriate:

Whatever day/evening you celebrate it, wishing you all a blessed Yule. May you have the necessary abundance to carry your household and your herds and flocks through the cold season and into the spring!

Here's hoping each of your celebrations is successful and ends on a happy note.

Great message, Cupper3. Happy Dies Natalis Solis Invicti to you - the birthday of the Unconquerable Sun, the rebirth of light and hope out of the darkest coldest night. That is the true meaning behind all those holidays, and that is what can unite us - the hope and the light.

Cupper: Sunny Ways to you.

To Cupper et al: Happy Holidays and that includes Christmas, Boxing Day for those who have that, New Years and New Year's Eve and all the days between the first and last holiday. And Chunnakak although by now that is a belated wish.

May 2016 be your best year yet.

Kind of how it is here too....the Halloween block party sets off the neighborhood with excess and overdecorating, that continues to Thanksgivin, and on to the CHristmas holidays
SO
as I say every year.....

Have a Wonderful Solstice, a COOL YULE,a Happy Hannukah, a Happy Festivus, a Merry Christmas, an Explosive Eid, a kickin' good Kwanzaa, a knockout of a Boxing Day, a grateful feast of Stephen, A Rocking New Years Eve, a happy and Prosperous New Year, a Fantastic TET and a good Chinese New Year. Hope I left no one out !

I'll just say Merry Christmas from our atheist house to yours and leave it at that.
