At least, surprising to me.

I would have thought in Mexico that religion was higher than the USA, it isn't. It also surprised me that Poland and Israel were less than in the USA.

On the other hand, it is good to see that just a slight majority (53%) in the USA think religion is important in their lives. They have a bit to go to get to Canada's 27%, but the trend is in that direction, thankfully. Last taken in 2007, the USA was at 56%. Not a huge drop, but again, in the right direction. My suspicion the decline rate will increase in the next few years.

Me too.

It's a very sad situation for what is supposed to be a highly-developed, well-educated nation.

At least it's headed in the right direction.

I am not considering how much religion is mentioned in politics and the number of people who on comments say they would not vote for a person of another religion. I do not know the relgion of my provincial representative, any of my councillors or major or the provincial premier. I know that our Prime Minister is Catholic and that my member of parlimament was a Mormon, or maybe he still , he died. I would be suprised if any of folks running for the by elecion will have their religion known to the public as it is just not important.

Besides I guess I sort of cheat on these matters as some of this is part of Human Geography studies and I used to teach labs in Intro to Human Geography. The US is very unlike the rest of the developed world in many aspects, an outlier on many graphs and oft times more closely on those graphs to Turkey than to CAnada or Australia.

You mean as two term mayor of the City of Calgary? In fact what he won his first election Alberta, one of the so called more religious or Christian provinces in Canada had a Muslim mayor in Calgary and a Jewish mayor of Edmonton which between the two cities has two thirds of the population of the province.

Naheed Nenshi, Mayor - The City of Calgary

Ten or eleven out of 338 federal members of parliament at least are Muslims. I had to search for that as I had no clue as to even if there were any elected in the last election.

Muslim Canadians Who Won in the 2015 Federal Election

Yes sometimes a candidate running for office or one elected has their religion known to the public, occasionally it is important to that community as for example Muslims no doubt wish to reassure other Canadians that they are part of the political, social and economic structure of the country. In one riding in BC last election every candidate had an East Indian sounding name and some groups are obvious to the public, like Chinese candidates or a Sikh cabinet minister https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harjit_Sajjan

Some candidates do bring up their religion and for others it has been brought up for them but however you look at end, overall religion has little to do with who gets elected. There are exceptions, in my city we had one lady elected on a Christian values issues but she was not re-elected. In municipal elections there are no parties in fact one of our former mayors who was our former police chief and who I thought was a hard core conservative ran for the Liberal party in a provincial or federal election.

Just to add, in your part of Alberta, there are many Mormons who have been elected to various posts, including federal Parliament. And fundamentalist Christians. And atheists. Our last Prime Minister was an evangelical Christian, however, made great efforts to ensure his personal faith did not reflect in government policy. Not reopening the abortion debate would be one example.

Federally and provincially, Canada has many ethnic and religious groups represented. We don't flip out if an elected official wears a turban, and understand that it is a symbol of their faith, Sikhism, not a symbol of Islamic terrorism.

Yeah lots of Mormons get elected to office cause there are lots of Mormons in this area. Ranchers have a better chance of being elected to office than many other occupations cause we got lots of ranchers in the area.

I know that there are many people in this area that opposed the bringing in of Syrian refugees however most of the community and many church groups have worked hard for these refugees. One of the refugees owned a restaurant in Syria so hopefully in the next couple of years we get a Syrian restaurant.

Only a few candidates that run for city office let their religion be known and only one that I remember that got elected made it part of her platform. Her big victory in office was to get porn shops moved from commercial areas to industrial areas. Then came faster internet.

Then if the question is `Do they believe in God `, then the religions of Buddhist and the humanist who say No ........... and if the questions is`` how important is religion ``, then the religions of many evangelical who have a relationship with God will say NO ....... So the result of this may be questionable

Russia is interesting. With the very low percentage, that may explain why Christianity is on the up rather than down, somewhat as in China. Surprising that it isn't what you's expect from the stats on belief in this or that religion - except USA in the middle and more religious than other Western nations.
