It is getting close to time for my son to receive his first holy communion, if we decide to proceed with it. I was raised Catholic, but as a parent, I have some reservations about leaving my child at the church for CCD classes due to the history of child molestation by priests. I know this is a topic that will offend some people.... I hesitate to talk to people in my life about this -- other than my spouse -- due to the sensitive nature of the topic. An anonymous website like this is helpful for that reason.
Does any parent out there feel similarly about the role of the Catholic church in their family life? I am also not crazy about donating money to the church if some of it will go to lawyers who are defending these criminal priests.
By the time the kid turns 15, they will have reached several MAJOR conclusions; many of which may NOT be in alignment with their parents thinking or beliefs.
If it makes you feel better and it causes no physical harm, there probably is no harm in satisfying yours or the wife's inner needs to appease god.
Ask the leaders if they have been bonded for criminal past for to leave the children ...........Also ask is any of these leaders are married .............With Christianity we Give by faith to Jesus , as the church receives , so if you do not give to Jesus by faith then don`t give anything .......
What would being married mean? Do you think there are no married pedophiles? I already explained in a previous post that a wife was complicit in her husband's sexual abuse of Girl Scouts.
Do the names Phillip and Nancy Garrido ring a bell?

"About 44 percent of convicted pedophiles either are or have been married, and a vast majority of pedophiles have sexual relationships with adults — only 7 percent say they are exclusively attracted to children."
One can google and find a lot of information on the web. Hopefully, hljc will educate himself instead of spouting off religious gibberish like "With Christianity we Give by faith to Jesus , as the church receives , so if you do not give to Jesus by faith then don`t give anything." As if chanting such gibberish prevents sexual abuse.

Exactly. What does that have to do with the subject of child abuse by the church; presuming, of course, that the gibberish makes sense to somebody in the first place.
This is the point where someone comes dashing onstage to declare "if you knew Jesus, you would understand it!"
I am not looking for validation. This is a topic that I have found really offends some people, so picking people's brains on an anonymous forum has been (at moments) helpful.
Sorry, I just would not be asking anyone on CD if I should put my child in any given situation. But that is just me. It's obvious you already have your own issues and are seeking, ~not validation~, but SOME helpful (at moments) guidance.
Below you state "It is getting close to time for my son to receive his first holy communion, if we decide to proceed with it.
At this point, you are not even sure you want your kid to receive first communion?
That tells me you are not even sure you want him raised in the Catholic Church, let alone go to catechism. Have you talked with a priest? That might be helpful. In case you haven't been to mass in a while, there is a lot of information and newer guidelines dealing with child abuse. That would be the first place to start, IMO. Why don't you pose your question to Catholic Answers or EWTN?
You can also ask about where your donated money goes to while you are speaking to a priest.
