There is something wrong with the data for Asia. I don't say this with any bad connotations, but Chinese and Japanese are some of the most superstitious people in the world. For example, in Japan, if someone died of an unnatural cause and their house is or sale, it must legally be disclosed, and there can be a huge deal on the property.
I think something must be lost in translation.

Being superstitious does not entail believing in any afterlife though.
I gave a very specific example of how is does in Japanese culture.
Well, I don't really "believe" in any afterlife, but I also don't prefer living in a house where someone died recently.
I think even a "belief" has many layers. Being agnostic is also a form of not believing.

I have been in contact with spirits for the last 25 years, and believe me, THERE IS AN AFTERLIFE.
I would suggest you google the name "Sarah Estep".
Contrary to your beliefs, she, among many of us have contacted those who have passed on.
She is considered a pioneer in teh field of evp.
I am still heavily involved in spirit contact, and if you would like to share some of my experiences, go on over to the paranormal/unexplained mysteries forum, and you can read many of my post.
I think that the rise in nihilistic behavior is a direct result of the rise of atheism.
Because if you truly believe that this is it, most will chase their base desires at the expense of others.
That is a nice theory but isn't based on actual experience.
As an atheist, my belief that "this is it" does not equate to licentiousness. It equates to holding the one life I actually have as more precious than I otherwise would, and being the best person I can be and having the best experience I can, and helping others to do the same.
Contrary to popular fantasy, my definition of "best" is not "more selfish and hedonistic".
My ethical and moral convictions did not change when I left the faith, because their actual foundation is in objective benefits and harms to myself and others, not divine command theory. I never was for example a faithful husband because god said so, but because I wanted to be and I want happiness for my wife and mutual happiness for both of us. As in all human relationships, we made a deal and it is best for all concerned to keep it because betrayal ruins relationships. I mean this stuff isn't complicated. Gods are not needed to explain or enforce it or motivate being a good actor.
I've read all of Michael Newton's books. I won't lie they make the spirit world seem like some marxist socialist utopia where the souls are given the illusion of freedom. He addresses this in his books but nonetheless it has a very "need to know" feel to it in which the souls are seemingly kept ignorant until they develop and increase their frequency. It's very segmented and compartmentalized with an authority structure just like our species and planet. This is supposedly so they "learn lessons" but if we are all infinite oneness, what's the point? My guess? Oneness is boring, so we choose to incarnate and live as various beings just for the sake of experiencing. By experiencing the source expands it's understanding. The universe and various dimensions are basically a playground for life. Nobody really knows for sure when it all started, if there was ever a beginning, or if life is infinite.. has existed, always will exist.
I have to admit I'd probably come back here just for the challenge. Given the choice between incarnating and wandering the spirit plane aimlessly, I might as well play the game they would have me play. I personally believe based on studying this physical universe, that it was intelligently created. It did not just form based on random chance.
I can go with that
