Yac.
That's exactly why I was surprised to see, in the most recent poll for 'What new forums should be created?', a ballot selection for a Religion forum. In my opinion that's an even more explosive hot topic than Politics! Having an entire forum devoted to Religion would probably end up requiring its very own fulltime moderator just to keep things civil.

LDS, I don't mean to start a controversy but you might want to do careful research. . . Try reading "Under The Banner of Heaven" by John Krakauer.

I don't want to start a controversy either, but the latter day saints (mormon)
are considered by most Christian denominations to be heretical because of their beliefs.

Ok I don't want to get off topic here but I just get so annoyed when ignorant people speak of things they know nothing of. Ya go read some book by an anti!!!! Heretical???? Well um that could be said of just about any church.
Don't wanna start a controversy either just don't say things you know nothing about.

Interesting question!

Is religion inherently divisive?

It didn't used to be......

It only happened after we let it ooze into our government. That's when people got downright perturbed. Prior to that, I think it was "live and let live". When organized religion decided it didn't want to "live and let live" anymore, and it wanted to invade our government, that's when folks started really fighting about this stuff.

hmmmm, 2000?

Default inherently divisive

I think it's just that religion is an area that many people (certainly myself included) feel very strongly about. Just like politics, only probably a little more so. I always heard the old adage or "supposed rule of etiquette" that at a party or wherever you should never discuss "sex, religion or politics!" Again, because people tend to feel strongly about these issues, obviously, things can get ugly real fast! Opinions we hold more loosely can be debated without getting our emotions involved as much I think.

That "rule of etiquette" was devised by the powers that be, lol. If you're not talking about it, you're not questioning it. We see how well THAT worked out.

I ALWAYS discuss politics at a party. In fact, I have no use for people that can't talk about such things. They bore me. Sex and religion, weeeeellll, that depends on the company, but they're not off the table either.
