That is, once a year, in front of the United Nations, and then the ashes removed from the planet?
The Bible is a holy book that has been used to commit much CRIME for many centuries.
It is not God’s Book [God doesn’t write books!!], but a DANGEROUS WEAPON of the fanatical and superstitious.
Then: once a year, officially, throughout the world, for two or three generations, to deliver the human race from its offensive gods and christs?
Here is an example of a man who used that "book of evil" to impact the government:

Burning books is a nonsensical way to show one's disagreement with the ideas presented in said books. Censorship, (whether in a symbolic gesture, or otherwise), of others' thoughts, ideas, and beliefs is unacceptable in a free society, and it makes no difference who is doing the burning. Such an action shows no level of mature thinking, or the give and take of honest dialogue between differing parties. It is not impossible for people with dissimilar ideologies to get along, if they will take the time to sit down with one another, and make an concerted effort to understand one another. Understanding does not mean agreeing. It means to "agree to disagree", in an adult, mature fashion. But when people start burning books, and refusing to come to the table, the opportunity for dialogue is lost. I do not agree with atheism, but I would never suggest that folks take a stance of censorship, (again, symbolical, or otherwise), by burning the books that atheists write and read.
why are people against Christ? what did he ever do that was so bad? He fought for people to be treated equally and for everyone to love their neighbor and be kind and generous, and he had a brutal death because he believed it would help society. It would be like hating Ghandi. Even if you are irreligious you should still have respect for the MAN.
The UN calls for peace, burning books would be reminiscent of Hitler. It would only start an outrage you fool. You cant anger 1/3 of the worlds population (actually much more because hindus and buddhists are advocats for all religions, so it would be like 1/2 of the world) to make little whiney atheists and agnostics happy!!!
Most of the responders here seem to have ignored the word "symbolic". You are getting all heated up because someone proposes this but does not say to do it.
In point of fact, the reaction would probably be to cause more people to examine this book than do so now. Isn't that what you really want?
This thread doesn't make any sense. Just because a few people take scriptures out of context doesn't make the Holy Bible BAD. Yes it was written by man, the words are pure and helps people walk with faith. It helps plenty more people then it hurts. Symobolic or not, its just not right, you see it as just burning a book, but others see it as burning a holy text. Just out of brotherly kindness you should be able to see that. Moreover, if we burned everything that influenced man to do commit acts of crime and violence we would be burning way more then the bible.
