Insults are the last resort of the incompetent Niik....You say you approve of and embrace science and modern medicine but think evolution has done nothing? You must live under a rock.

Like all biological systems, both disease-causing organisms and their victims evolve. Understanding evolution can make a big difference in how we treat disease. The evolution of disease-causing organisms may outpace our ability to invent new treatments, but studying the evolution of drug resistance can help us slow it. Learning about the evolutionary origins of diseases may provide clues about how to treat them. And considering the basic processes of evolution can help us understand the roots of genetic diseases.

Many of the treatments we have today are due to the study of evolution.

What exactly are you trying to say? If it is that religious people invented things long ago, I agree, but then long ago almost everyone was religious....What has religion done for science in modern times?

In any case the topic is what has science done for you lately, not who invented the clock.

The Quakers and Jesuits of modern times still promote or fund research.

I'm not sure why praising science has to mean bashing anything, but carry on.

Which science is real and which isn't for you?

Is astronomy science? Geology? Oceanography? Archaeology? Physics? Climatology? Biology? All sciences that support an old Earth...are they all not science?

What credentials do you have to dismiss the many different sciences and the people who dedicate their lives to these fields?

Cool The scary part of science.

NIKK avoids rational reviews of scientific topics, and how they get to their reliable answers. Long ago (in Sept. 08) he danced around a thread I pretty much put together with him and other stubborn Christians like him in mind, back when I really didn't know how they would reliably respond.

They jumped on my topic even before I'd explained what had been done. As in: "Don't ever give the truth an even break!" right?

Science is but a system which has evolved to minimize or eliminate the usual biases and errors in folks' individual approaches to questions and answers. There are some obvious ways to do this, and this system applies euqally well to secular and spritual questions:

√ a careful statement of what single question you're trying to answer;

√ a careful statement of what methods and materials you used, along with a bibliography of previous works, their shortcomings, and how you might get beyond those;

√ a careful presentation of the results you achieved;

√ a thoughtful and conservative assessment of what the results you documented might mean, plus of course, a full discussion of the possible areas of concern, of error or of other possible interpretations;

√ a summary of exactly what you concluded, no more, along with the implied invitation for others to reproduce your work, do it better, with newer equipment or more money (!), etc.

Then, the rigorous peer reviews begin, including the eventual publication of acceptable research results so that this new informartion is spread 'round the world. Oh no!

So... just what is it about such a well-structured and logical process that offends the Christians?

Well, it's obvious, isn't it?
When the ancient fairy tales are queried in this manner, the scientific method provides real, accurate and defensible answers. Then, all heck breaks loose, and the nonsense stuff is, pure and simple, debunked, refuted, dismissed and obliviated beyond recognition.

Therefore, "science" must be criticized and stomped on. Or contaminated by such tripe as the teaching in science class of "Intelligent Design" theory.

The truth's pretty scary, I realize, to those who depend on lies and fairy tales to get through the day.

Knowledge = power. Religious zealotry = fear and dependancy. Oh, and knowledge also requires some honest effort and an open mind. Bigotry and blind faith? Not so much.
