Of course the Bible always associates evil and temptation with satan. That would seem to suggest that satan somehow caused things that are evil to come into existence. Genesis doesn't seem to get into the details of how satan rebelled and took a third of the angels with him although I think it mentions it elsewhere. Satan is represented as a serpent in Genesis so this rebellion happened right off the bat after God is supposed to have created the universe and all living things. Then of course Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ruined everything (yeah, like thanks Dude and Dudess for destroying my life!). Anyway, my question is this, was there a period of time according to believers in which there was no evil in the universe and was this evil caused by satan?
Very good question. My simple ans. Satan was a angel named Lucifer that rebelled against God. So God cast him out of Heaven to become Satan.
NOW what caused him to go against God is another question that i don't know because there was no evil before him--- or was there??

Hmmm...kinda cool how the devil started with a Latin name the ended up with a Hebrew title. (Satan is a title...not a name).
I'd also like to know if the Bible states at what point in history that Lucifer and his disgruntled angels decided to rebel against God. I'm not sure if the Bible clearly tells us whether satan had established this rebellion before or after the creation of Adam and Eve. Wouldn't it have made more sense for God to have put down this rebellion before it destroyed the human race and all of creation literally went to hell in a handbasket?

Wrong. The Serpent in Genesis had nothing to do whatsoever with "Satan"; it had to do with undermining previously established gods within the various snake cults in ancient Sumeria - Abraham's birthplace. The concept of "Satan" on the other hand was a very late introduction into the realm of Jewish thought, and was influenced by Persian dualism just a few hundred years before the supposed life of Jesus.

Wrong. Lucifer (meaning "the light bearer") was a direct reference to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon during the Exile, and was uttered by either the 2nd or 3rd Isaiah as an insult to the kings "greatness". The ancient term "Lucifer" referred to the planet Venus ("the morning star"). As most ancient kings were compared to the greatness of the sun, the 2nd/3rd Isaiah took a pot-shot at referring to Nebuchadnezzar as its lesser-star - Venus. Nebuchadnezzar was a very pompous and proud ruler, and the prophet had foreseen the downfall of Babylon at the hands of the Cyrus the Persian; and therefore belittled the kings significance in veiled writings.
Lucifer being equated with "Satan"/"The Devil" is a common religious misconception.
Ever wonder why we are taught to forgive our enemies, and to love them as ourselves,--Yet God won't forgive Satan. Seems contradictory to me.
Satan gives god the power. Without satan, no one would get excited about god. It is all about marketing.
Did you also notice all the loving versions (relgions) of god never seem to get together and let us know which version is real? Yet, people kill each other in their name thinking they follow the right version.

I don't know, I'm a little dubious about that. I'm an atheist and don't believe in talking snakes or God anyway but I'm just trying to understand the timeline and sequence of events that mainstream believers consider to be accurate. Are you dubious about the existence of God like I am or do you believe in a different historical religious concept? I'm basing my OP on the passages written in Genesis and don't recall any references to snake cults in ancient Sumeria. I see you're new so welcome.

The Latin term "Lucifer" was originally translated from the Hebrew word helel; literally meaning "the shining one". It was a planetary reference to "the morning star" Venus.
It wasn't until long afterwards that it was translated into Latin.
