...there are some sceptical persons who may think that when the mind is not moved by many thoughts, it will be in a stupid state. But stupidity does not arise just because the mind relaxes a little. On the contrary, the mind usually thinks too much. We are used to thinking uninterruptedly and continuously. If we look at these thoughts more closely, however, we discover that we seldom think meaningfully at all, and that most of our thinking is rather senseless. Such senseless thinking happens frequently and repeats itself over and over. In this way our many endlessly occurring thoughts are continuously going around and around in circles. If we are able to decrease this senseless thinking, meaningful thoughts will naturally increase all by themselves. And this is exactly the reason for the meditation on calm abiding: when the mind relaxes, senseless thinking will effortlessly diminish.

That is very similar to how someone described a type of yoga to me. Two of my wife's friends started meditating and swear that they have stopped using blood pressure pills within 6 months. Interesting stuff.

PS: I realize your angle is a wee bit more spiritual, but I'll take what I can get out of it

I think you will find this the basis for effective prayer as well........it is why praying in public does not produce results and why Jesus said not to pray in public, ever. It is only in the quiet of being alone that one can achieve the decrease in what you call senseless thinking that one can hear the creator/inner voice clearly.......many of these people call it inspiration....it could also be considered a lack of mental noise that allows good thoughts through.

Can you give me an example of "senseless thinking"? Would that be like thinking about unimportant things, or maybe reviewing a memory repeatedly?
