Today marks the 30th anniversary of the murder of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador

It is sometimes said, inside the Catholic Church: “Saints become saints before they are actually called saints"

So today is the 30th anniversary of his death, it would seem that Rome does not look to kindly towards him and the other religious and lay people that were rape, tortured and murdered by right wing death squads trained by our country.

In the past 2 weeks he has been mentioned by the priests in their homilies, the one priest mentioned he was there in El Savador at the time and mentioned some of the details in Romero's homilies,
I even heard that dirty 4 letter word Liberation Theology mentioned.
This past Sunday my pastor mentioned how the Bishop's murder had a very profound influence on his life.

I was wondering if any other churches had mentioned him.
I wonder if he was brought up in the homilies of conservative bishops and priests.

If there was ever a saint it would be Romero, but the Catholic Church(hierarchy) came down squarely in favor of the oppresive right wing dictatorship and the rich ruling class in El Salvador while without doubt Jesus would have been on the side of Archbishop Romero and the poor.
If he was murdered in Eastern Europe By the Communists no doubt John Paul II would have put him on the fast track for sainthood.

The rightists also were emboldened by the election of Ronald Reagan in November 1980. The next month, Salvadoran security forces kidnapped, raped and murdered four American churchwomen, an act that some members of Reagan's inner circle found reasons to excuse.

He began a courageous three-year ministry openly opposing the Salvadoran military, the wealthy elites and his compromised Catholic Church hierarchy, which had long sided with the rich and powerful.
