I think you have to make a distinction here between authentic Mexican and Mexi-American. As far as I'm concerned, we have too many Mexi-American joints where the food may be prepared a bit differently with different levels of freshness, but it's all the same bs cr p like beef, pork, or chicken tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and quesadillas. As far as I'm concerned, you're not an authentic Mexican restaurant if you don't serve beef tongue, tripe, maybe intestines, oxtail. Unfortunately, these restaurants tend to be cheap, dirty, not fresh, and will get you sick. That is why I so highly rate Betos. They are an authentic Mexican restaurant that is fresh, clean, nice and serves menudo, burria, pozole, cabeza, tripitas. OMG it's making my stomach horney. I'm sorry, but you can't say Chili's or Macho Tequila are the best "Mexican". They may be the best "Mexi-American" or "Southwest". It's like going to Korea and they have an "American" burger joint, but instead of ground beef patties they have dog patties with kimchee instead of lettuce. It may taste great to them, but it's not really "American."

Most authentic Mexican in a sitdown restaurant I've found is Los Cuatro Vientos. (the four winds) Other than that, there are some good taco trucks on Wells Ave, especially on Fri and Sat night.
