So I am considering taking a postdoc position at the Desert Research Institute in Reno. I only passed through Reno once when I went to Lake Tahoe, so I didn't get much of the city. I also plan on visiting before I accept any offer.

However, I was just curious where people might recommend that I look to live. I am 28, single, male, and while I will be working a lot, I don't want to be too far away from the action. I would prefer to live not right in a downtown setting, but close enough where I can get the quiet when at home and still get down to where fun places (restaurants, bars, shopping, museums, etc.) are pretty easily.

What are rent prices like there? What about condo/townhome prices?

Thanks for any and all info!

One thing about Reno, you can live just about anywhere and still be only miles from Downtown.
As for the area, you would have to just make the trip and check it out yourself. Although I would NOT recommend anywhere around Wells or Odie (not quiet areas)
Not sure what Apt rent is going for, but the Reno Gazette Journal shows a 1-bdrm can go anywhere from $750-$900 all depends on the area. Reno is nice, you just have to do your homework on the right area-drive by at night (just like you would anywhere else)
Good Luck

Southwest downtown would be a good place. It's close enough to the action to bike or drive too and still not saturated with casinos. Lots of new development in south Reno though then you get to deal with the commute. A lot depends on what exactly you're looking for ..or not looking for.

1 bedroom rent goes for about $750 and condos and townhouses are cheap, bc they can't sell them and there's too many of them here. It's a renter's market in addition to a buyer's market. You might want to consider buying if you have the money, then sell when you're done with the DRI.

I recommend Northwest Reno or Sparks. It's close to work. Don't go up to the North Valleys north of DRI bc it's more rural/old suburban. NW Reno and Sparks are new suburban which means lots of big chain restaurants and chain stores. Sparks is next door to Reno. It's actually the same distance between DRI and NW Reno and DRI and Sparks. Unlike in some cities, Sparks is not the poorer brother of Reno but pretty equal as far as per capita thanks to the new development in East Sparks.

This area is actually pretty small, and you can almost anywhere in 15 minutes. You'll be amazed. I'd take a drive around to see what's nice and fits your idea of a good neighborhood. Also depends if you want a brand new apartment complex or an old house. The newer, the further out is the rule. But check out California Ave if you're into museums and bars and restaurants. It's a little south of downtown. No big apartment complexes there but old houses for rent.
