My lease agreement says that I should move out on the 22nd of July. The move-in date was 1st July, 2009. Now, the management tells me that I should pay the rent in full for the last month, though they chose the move-out date! They also tell me that had I moved out on say, the 20th, with 10 days to spare, they would have allowed me to pro-rate! I tried to argue that the manager was self-contradicting because they choose the move-out date in the first place. Is there anything I can do to avoid paying the full month rent?
Does the lease mention the total amount of the lease payments? I know my last lease did. If it does, does it appear to include the last month at the full rate?
No, the lease does not mention the total amount of the payment, but only the rent due per month. I am worried that if I pay the pro-rated amount since the lease does not explicitly mention paying the full month's rent for the last month, they could forward my name to collection agency to collect the balance!

Where I live, they put a notice on your door every month with the amount due (the rent plus water, which varies a little).
My lease is up this month, but they put a whole month's rent on the notice. I called the office and got the pro-rated amount and that's the amount I'm paying today.
Regarding the collection agency, you're worried about something that hasn't happened yet and is unlikely to happen at all. Just pay the pro-rated amount and be done with it.
