Our home has no heat upstairs (house built in 1890's). We have one huge heating grate in the middle of the floor between the dining room and living room. It is the only source of heat. There is no ductwork at all upstairs or in any other rooms downstairs. Our home is inspected every three years by the city (for landlord to renew rental license) and it passes every time. Apparently, no heat upstairs is not a habitability issue. I will say, however, that our one big grate does a good job of heating most of the house (the bathroom is freezing). If it gets too cold upstairs, we do have little space heaters.

A big grate in the landing upstairs would be great!

We'll just look into electric blankets and all will be well.

The home I grew up in had no heat... and my parents grew up in homes where the only heat was kitchen/living room.

It is still common to find homes here with a single wall furnace or floor furnace... they work OK as long as interior doors are left open.

My Grandmother made all the Grand kids Down Comforters and they really worked out nice in the winter after the initial shock of getting into a cold bed

It's not the end of the world. It's just that he told us there is electric heat in those two rooms and they don't work. I'm not going to pursue it with him, however, as I need to pick my battles.

I gave my tenants a DeLonghi ceramic space heater for the master closet (9' x 9') that was not heated and they decided to use as a for their newborn baby. They love it. I have one of these heaters myself and they are FABULOUS, it heats my 12 x 15 foot home office very well. This heater has an auto shut off when they are tipped over. They are beyond terrific and cost about $20. Great find.

When my boys were younger, I bought them footed thermal jammies used for/by campers (I say younger, 4-8) and they LOVED them. They bragged to friends that they got to camp out in their bedroom even in the winter. They both had thermal blankets and I made thermal quilts for their beds but they seldom used the quilts. We kept the heat off in the bedrooms as I also love it cold for sleeping. So long as the temperature wasn't in the minus numbers, we all just snuggled in.
