Should a single person making less than $50K a year rent in a major city? (apartments, roommates)

Since rents in major cities like NYC, Boston, LA, SF, ect. continue to escalate ever higher, should a single person who wants to live alone, and makes less than $50K a year, even try to rent in major cities? And I'm talking about renting in fairly decent neighborhoods (where you can feel safe, and that's not crime-ridden). Should singles making less than $50K a year, just give-up on renting in the major cities? What's the answer??

You can rent for 50k a year in Boston. Not Boston "proper" or downtown but perfectly safe and very urban places(Brighton, Cambridge, Somerville) with lots of things to do for young people and access to public transportation. I can't speak of the other places because I'm not that familiar with them. NYC is a little more dicey.

But what if you only made $35K or $40K a year? Could you still rent in those areas of Boston?
What if y0ou can't stand the idea of living with a roommate, and want to live alone?
I don't know what to tell you. Apartments in Brighton you can get for maybe 850-1100. They will be small and not great(but you can get a clean one). You can't have everything for nothing.

Then you're basically out of luck.. unless you want to get a part time job to add to your monthly income. It's simple math here.
However, at your age (48), it's not smart to stretch your income so much in order to live by yourself. You really need to start saving for retirement. You're too old to be living week to week. And you can't count on winning a lottery to save you.

Let's get one thing straight right now. You have beat-up on me so much on other threads, that I refuse to respond to you, after this comment. I despise the way that you think you know what's best for me, without even knowing me. So don't bother to create any more posts, that are directed at me! I won't respond to you, anyhow.
