I am renting a house that has an addition upstairs but is not a separate address. When I agreed to rent out the house, the property manager let me know that the owner's sister was going to be living up there while she's going to school. She was to pay me a certain amount for utilities. Now she's moving out to live with her boyfriend and the owner wants to rent it out to someone else. Do I have the right to tell them that I don't want anyone to live up there? I don't even know if the house is coded to even have the addition upstairs. How do I find that out?

How is your lease written and exactly what is the description of the property? Is it noted on the lease that a portion of it will be rented to someone other than you? It sounds as though you agreed to a whacky arrangement to start out with and I'd suggest you carefully read both your lease and your state landlord tenant laws (probably linked in the first "sticky" on this forum) AND consult an attorney if you can't figure out exactly what you're renting. Good luck.
