Improve your job performance, take on new tasks. Still take monthly as it may be too late to change their minds. They need to cut costs, and the handwriting is on the wall for you to see. But go down having left no stone unturned in improving your performance at work.
I cannot improve my job performance. I really am doing the best I can. I seriously don't know what I can do better and I thought I was doing well all this time. There are no new tasks to take on. I said that the manager already knew about how underutilized I was since last summer. They keep telling me that they are going to try to give me more things to do, but I'm still waiting. I'm not superman. I can't just magically improve my performance if I already felt that I was doing the best I can do.

Your employer said you are below average. That is unacceptable to any employer. They are in financial trouble. Underperformers will go first.

Well, I'm doing the best I can, so too bad. If they want to lay me off, then so be it. I have over $50K in the bank, no children, no debt, and my parents are millionaires. I also still get tons of messages from recruiters and employers asking me if I am interested in positions here in CT and nationwide, to my surprise. I thought my career was over, but I guess I'm still marketable...
Anyway, I think I will renew the lease for a whole new year and lock in the low rate, since I have no intent to leave my job. If I do get let go for whatever reason, the landlord will be required to make reasonable efforts to re-rent the apartment, under the law.

I was always under the impression that that I am unemployable and need to hunker down and stay in my current job for at least a total of 4 years, because my career history is very unstable with unemployment gaps, lay offs, changes, relocations, etc. But at the same time, i receive probably 1-3 emails per month from recruiters and employers presenting new opportunities to me here in CT and across the country. I am shocked that they even express interest in me. They can see my entire career history on my LinkedIn profile and how choppy it really is. So, I don't know what they're smoking.

IF you get an interview, the average candidate has under a 1 in 10 shot. Odds of a resume leading to an interview-worse. Any position ends up with dozens of circular file resumes per interview.
It is vital you avoid being fired at consecutive jobs. Not gonna look good saying "Call up my 3rd most recent employer, but not the last 2..".

1-3 per month for me is pretty good and at least as much as I'm used to in the past, before I had career stability issues.
