Hi all!

I've been in my current apartment since March 2014, since May of 2014 I've requested service 8 times for the closet window and main window in my bedroom. There were extreme drafts, which blew the weather insulation film i put right off, water leaking and bugs coming through. Under the main window, there were PLANTS growing between the wall and floor through the carpet. Finally early spring 2017 they replaced the main window and left the closet window untouched.

Since Ive been in this apartment i've had serious environmental allergies, sinus infections (4-5x/year), nosebleeds (nose cauterized 3x in the last 2 years) and fatigue to the point where my doctors are testing me for auto immune diseases. I started allergy immunotherapy a couple of months ago which are 4 shots once a week. Almost 2 weeks ago I noticed mold growing at the top of the closet window, i pulled up the shade and water marks were everywhere as well as what I think looks like mold. Could this be why Im always sick?! I requested service be done to the leaky, "moldy" window no maintenance showed up. Requested it again, called and wrote an email to the property manager. One of the maintenance guys shows up, sprays bleach and lifts the carpet. He said no visible mold under either window but the newly replaced window is now separating from the walls on both sides and below the main window under the carpet is a HUGE crack in the cement floor.

After going back and forth with management, he is sending a contractor to replace the window. But he says he emailed pictures to the mold specialist and spoke to him, and apparently on my drywall around the window its mildew not mold. And he wouldn't be there when the window is replaced.... I was under the impression that mildew grew only on plants and mold on other things.

I don't know what to do at this point. Has anyone had experience with something like this? Any advice?

Mildew grows everywhere. Mostly in bathrooms and any wet areas. If you feel it may be the very rare form of dangerous black mold, hire your own mold specialist and have it tested.

How could I tell if it is one or the other?

Why in the world have you continued to live there? Plants are growing in your room, and they don't fix it, and then you renew your lease??

The only way to tell the difference is to have it professionally tested. The kind of black mold that kills is extremely rare. Sure other molds can cause health issues if one is allergic to it, but the likelihood of this being toxic mold is minimal.

Why in the world did you renew your lease repeatedly for 3 years if you've had these problems since the beginning.

Staying in this situation is/has been a choice. Move out.

Step 1... Spray it with some Clorox spray cleaner or Tilex.

It's affordable housing... I've been on multiple waiting lists but haven't received a call yet. Can't afford any other places to live.... so it is not a choice at this point.
