By all means. Just hope yours will work out well, since renting to/from a friend is often not a good idea. A real friend should not mind your asking for a receipt.
Not only is it fair to ask for a receipt, but you need to ask for a lease as well. I understand this is your friend, but friends and money do not mix well...so protect yourself and your friend and get eveyrthing in writing.
I haven't done this for a long time (last time was for a few months in 2000), but how hard is it to find a room for rent in big metro areas these days? Especially DC, Nashville, Raleigh, Charlotte, Phoenix, or Atlanta?

Re: DC - With the high rent in the DC Metro area, I think it's pretty easy to find people looking for roommates.

Check out craigslist. They have a section showing rooms for rent. You can also post an add with a room wanted and people who have rooms available will contact you.
