I despise wood (or fake wood) flooring and it seems it is in every apartment and house now. Just get an area rug from Lowes or Home Depot. Even Penney's has some decent ones. Nylon ones are pretty soft. Viscose is very soft, but pricey. You could also opt for carpet tiles, which probably would not cost much more than a large area rug. I have never used those, though, not sure how much of the adhesive remains when you pull them up.

Don't do that! The adhesive could ruin the wood flooring.
OP, just get a carpet pad designed for use on hardwood flooring (any carpet store will have them) and sized for your rug, and lay your area rug on top of it. It will give you that soft footing you're looking for, and will protect the wood floor underneath.
We go to carpet store and have remnant carpets bound on the edges to use as area rungs, much cheaper and bigger than purchased area rugs.
This is your answer. If you want to really go on the cheap ask for scraps at a carpet store and bond them yourself, it’s really easy to do. I did this after college in an apartment where the landlord refused to change the ratty old carpet.
Another thing, my last apartment was the laminated wood & I put furniture protectors under all my furniture. No flooring was scratched & I got my entire deposit back when I moved. I bought mine through Amazon but Home Depot had them too. They are easy to use & protected the floor.
Big Lots has some decent area rugs for reasonable prices. You could also check out some estate sales.
