I might be gone by then, technically speaking. Then again, I might not.

I live in California.

I also have jury duty at the end of August with my extreme financial difficulty excuse denied.

Never been in a situation like this before.

What happens now?

Sounds like you may have legal action ........ you don't want that.

Are you planning to speak to the Landlord about the hardship?

I would talk to the landlord and move out before an eviction
is filed. Go thru the moveout process, written letter of intent
to vacate including the intended day. This way the landlord
can arrange re-rental, which in the long run will help you.
You'll lose the security deposit and any rental fees for the
month/months vacant until a new tenants lease begins.
Request a move out walk thru with management, as well.

It sure beats an eviction on your credit record.
Good Luck

Nah, at least not until they start calling wondering why I haven't paid yet. It's not really their problem, at least not until I move out.

This place has changed management companies a few times since I moved here and I don't think they realize what a dump it is. I can tolerate a certain level of squalor but after the rent increase that goes into effect in a few weeks I decided to just bail. Don't think I will be ready by the first though. Let them stimulate someone else's economy by fixing this place up.

Also I don't have any money or friends to help me move so I will probably only take the small and important things and just leave the rest.

How long does the eviction process take? How long can I linger on before it goes that far? With such a bleak housing situation/work situation and a possible mental breakdown in progress I am not sure if I should be all that worried about a credit record.

When was your lease till? I think it can take time to evict someone. If I were you though and you are planning on staying but just paying late I would talk to the LL. If you need to break your lease you may want to see if you can find someone to take over your lease. I did that before and that way I did not have bad credit or fees added.Good luck in everything

Sounds as though, despite good advice, you've already made up your mind to do things entirely the wrong way, so guess you'll have to live with the consequences. A court proceeding and judgement against you will follow you and potentially make it VERY difficult to obtain another rental in the future and can also spill over into many other areas via a bad credit report. Good luck.

Mmm, so because you decided to rent a dumpy apartment, it's ok to skip out? Interesting rationale.

The management company and the sheriffs office will serve you plenty of notices to pay or quit, and let you know when your court date is. Good luck finding a decent apartment after this, because no good community will take you with an eviction on your record. You'll end up in another dumpy apartment, which you'll probably skip out on too, after justifying it in your mind, because, after all, it's crap so they can't really expect you to pay for it, can they?

Quality.

So you're admitting that you're a deadbeat. Way to go. Stiff someone else for your financial responsibilities, because of course if you CAN do it, it's "okay". Good god, people who don't take responsibility for themselves are annoying.
