GM was dumb for killing Pontiac. They could have easily turned it into the GM performance brand. They had the Solstice and the G8 when they killed it off. With the return of the Camaro a few years later, they could have brought back the Firebird. Throw in a turbocharged Grand Prix and that would have been a stout lineup. Maybe even some performance-oriented crossovers if that's what people want these days.
I can see getting rid of Oldsmobile, but killing Pontiac seemed unnecessary.

I miss Pontiac myself.
GM wanted to keep Pontiac as a niche/performance brand. The Obama administration made them kill it as a condition for the bailout and restructuring through expedited bankruptcy.

I miss Oldsmobile almost as much as Pontiac. The mid-70s Cutlass was America's sales leader and launched Olds to the number 3 spot in sales behind Chevy and Ford. They were incomparable.
Like Pontiac's sad story, GM stopped making Oldsmobiles long before the nameplate was retired.
GM really ****** up and lost a lot of loyalty with that decision.
I would probably still be a GM owner today, if not for their shortsightedness.
Was supposed to be the ultimate import fighter.
Initially had an almost cult following similar to the early VW Beetle. Most are too young to remember but early VW owners used to wave to each other.
GM management basically abandoned the brand. With no new product for years.
The ION was a neat car but an odd (copied from Toyota) center instrument panel. And no station wagon.
Instead of updating the ION GM just dumped it. Brought in an expensive German Opel as replacement.
