I remodeled my house, bought a new used car, hopped in my motorhome, traveled out west and back to Florida, 7200 miles in 63 days, had a blast! Since then, have been doing more traveling, going to Az in Sept and NYC in October...then? Who knows!
Not retired yet so I can't say I have done something special yet or even planned it though I think that would be a great idea. I know when I retire my wife will still be working (at least she says she will be). We are both the same age and so when I retire at 60 and she plans to stop at age 62 that we are planning our retirement move. But that does not qualify as a celebration so I like the Tahiti idea. Even Hawaii would be fun to do as well. I will give it some thought and work out the plan. Probably even keep it a secret from the wife to spring it on her at the retirement party I will get her office to through for her. I like that. Thanks luvmyhoss ! Great suggestion.
Make sure you stay in the Beachcomber Motel. The thatched rooms are set on pilings
in the water. The lagoon/pool is right next to deep water. You can see whales meander
by.
No celebration. A few weeks before I retired, my wife (already retired) suffered a debilitating fall crushing her shoulder and seriously fracturing a wrist. Almost a year and four surgeries later we were finally able to move to our new state. Celebrating just got lost in the medical shuffle.

Sorry that happened. I wish it were not like that. Everyone should get a chance at some fun after so many years.

Thank you. We do too. Oh, but we have fun now. Even with mobility deficits on both our parts, we can still drive and do a lot of short trips exploring historic and nature sites. It's fun and engaging and the possibilities are endless. Our last foray, last week, took us to a moonshine still tucked under a log cabin with a three generation history which has just received the first moonshine license ever issued in this state. They make the real thing, not the stuff you'll find on some store shelves. Mighty fine "shine" too. The Baldwin Sister's Papa's "Recipe" couldn't be any better.
I was 47 when I retired from my real job of 30 years. I was working 60-80 hours a week 6-7 days a week. My first year being retired I celebrated by throwing away all my alarm clocks and then I started to read and watch the news. I started walking the dog and making trips to state parks for the day. I learned there was 2 classes of people (this had never occurred to me before). The slave to work class that are obligated to subject themselves to other peoples whims and demands and the retired class that are fully liberated and self directed.
The real celebration of retirement was learning that life was really great. Retiring was the smartest move I have ever made.
Very similar story here (47 yo, long work weeks). It takes several months to decompress and start to enjoy life after being in that grind -----hope you enjoy the second half of your life.

No problem. I will look into it. I don't know if Tahiti will be that celebration location but it will be a location I will visit.
My first trip after retirement will likely be a trip to visit a son in graduate school. I'll be helping him drive there shortly. What's happening is my wife can't go because there isn't enough room in the car for her with all of his stuff. She's planning on going next year to visit and we'll likely extend the trip out to visit other places in the northeast. Any bigger trips will have to wait until after my wife retires.
