Well, Happy in Wyoming, I always knew you were a real contrarian, and here's more proof of it! No idea is too bizarre to lack at least a few adherents, at least on of whom will probably write a book about it.
Perhaps tobacco as used say for stopping bleeding or with insect bites but tabocco smoke? Its no different really than breathing a lot of smoke from other burnt things, not good.
I have no doubt that there were advertised health benefits to smoking. When I was in school, I went and visited a very elderly pastor. This was like 1990. He told me that when TB was a common problem, that smoking was supposedly good for clergy to use, if they made sick calls on those who had TB. Supposedly the smoke coated your lungs and made it less likely for others to catch TB.
Which part? Women of my mother's era were indeed encouraged to smoke because it would mean a smaller baby and it provided some protection against pre eclampsia. Nursing mothers were advised to drink beer as well. Motherhood certainly sounds like it was more fun "back then".
Dr. Douglas is always an interesting read. I can't figure out a safe, palatable way to get any of the supposed benefits of tobacco use that out weigh the downsides. I was thinking about eating the tender greens, considering that people in my area eat poke sallet which is poisen if not cooked properly, but I couldn't find any online references to tobacco as a food source.
Not at all. I consider Alzheimer's to be a terrible disease; the studies indicate that nicotine reduces the risk by 50%. Note that the author is not a fan of cigarettes or chewing tobacco but favors cigars. Since eating it would presumably involve chewing there would be a heightened risk of mouth cancer.
However, I must point out that Sigmund Freud who was seldom without a cigar had to have surgery several times for mouth cancer. We need to weigh the positives and negatives.
Here is a story... years and years ago, I worked with a nice older lady who used to set the trashcan on fire every once in a while. This was back in the days when smoking at work was a thing. We would talk and talk... she told me about how she came to be a smoker. She said she had a "nervous breakdown" and was hospitalized ... during her recovery in hospital, the nurses taught her to smoke -- she said, "to calm me down."
Now also, my mom smoked... she said that when she went to the doctor all sick and stuffed up, he told her to switch to menthol cigarettes, that she would feel better...
